How Our Actions Shape Our Eternal Record

A surreal depiction of the Deedbook confronting a person on Yawm ul-Akhirah, floating in divine light as a figure stands in awe and reflection, symbolizing accountability before Allah.

The Deed Book: A Witness That Never Lies

On the Day of Judgment, every human will receive their Book of Deeds, which contains everything they did in this world—good and evil. Human hands do not write this book, nor can anyone alter or erase it. The angels record every action, every word, and every hidden thought.

Allah says in the Quran:

“And the record [of deeds] will be placed [open], and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it, and they will say, ‘Oh, woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?’ And they will find what they did present [before them]. And your Lord does injustice to no one.” (Surah Al-Kahf 18:49)

The people who receive their book in their right hand will rejoice because their record is full of righteousness, mercy, and sincerity. But those who receive their book in their left hand will face a terrifying reality—they will see their sins written before them, with no way to deny; many believe their harmful actions toward others—such as backbiting, slander, spreading false rumors, or damaging someone’s reputation—will have no consequence. They think they can escape if they hide their intentions or justify their actions. But in reality, every injustice we do to others is an injustice to ourselves.

On the Day of Judgment, our own Book of Deeds will become our greatest enemy. The actions we thought harmed others will turn against us, exposing our wrongdoing and demanding justice.

Allah warns us:

“And do not slander one another, nor backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it! And fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is accepting of repentance and Merciful.” (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12)

The sins we commit against others will not just remain in our book—they will take away our good deeds! On that day, the people we harmed will take from our good deeds as compensation, and if our good deeds run out, their sins will be placed upon us.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked his companions:

“Do you know who is bankrupt?”

They replied, “The one who has no money or property.”

He said, “No, the bankrupt is the one who comes on the Day of Judgment with prayers, fasting, and charity, but he has insulted this person, slandered that person, unlawfully consumed the wealth of another, shed the blood of another, and beaten another. So his good deeds will be taken and given to those he wronged. And if his good deeds run out before justice is fulfilled, the sins of those he wronged will be placed upon him, and he will be thrown into Hell.” (Muslim 2581)

Imagine standing before Allah, hoping for His mercy, only to find that your good deeds are taken away and handed to the very people you harmed. That small lie, that gossip, slander—it all comes back, but this time, it is no longer just words. It is the difference between salvation and destruction.

Think Before You Act: Every Deed Will Return to You

Every word we speak, every action we take, and every choice we make is being recorded. If we knew that a camera was capturing our every move, we would be careful about what we say and do. But what about the Book of Deeds, written by the angels and will be presented before Allah?

Before we speak, we must ask ourselves:

• Am I saying something that will bring me regret on the Day of Judgment?

• Am I harming someone else in a way that will cost me my good deeds?

• Am I doing something I wouldn’t want to see written in my book when I stand before Allah?

Allah reminds us:

Not a word does he utter, but there is a vigilant observer (recording it).” (Surah Qaf 50:18)

Every sin can be erased through repentance, but our book is sealed forever once we die. There is no editing, no second chances, and no excuses.

Conclusion

Be Mindful, Because Your Deeds Will Speak for You

The Book of Deeds is not just a record—it is the testimony of our life. It will either stand as a witness in our favor or testify against us in the most critical moment of our existence. Those who receive their book in their right hand will rejoice, while those who receive it in their left will face regret beyond imagination.

We must remember that whatever harm we do to others, we are doing to ourselves. The Day of Judgment is the day of justice—every wrong will be made right. So, before we act, before we speak, and before we judge others, let us pause and think:

Is this something I want to see written in my Book of Deeds?

May Allah guide us to righteousness, protect us from harming others, and grant us our book in our right hand. Ameen.
